Operating Tips for Woodworking Band Saw Blades

1. Do not go too fast.

While it may be tempting to set all your bandsaws to the highest speeds possible to increase productivity, this is not the best idea for brand new blades. Give your blades some time to adjust on a moderate speed before increasing the speed. Every new product will need to have a break-in period before they start functioning at their optimal level.

2. Frequent maintenance.

It is not enough to simply repair your woodworking band saw blades only when you start encountering issues. Make sure you have a reasonable schedule of blade maintenance, which should involve visual inspections and cleaning. A poorly-maintained blade and saw will produce excessive noise and vibrations, which can cause inaccuracies in the cutting process, not to mention the nuisance it causes for your workers. Take some time every now and then to sharpen your blades as well in order to ensure their performance stays consistent.

3. Keep an eye on blade tension.

Working with a bandsaw does not end when the cutting process itself is done. When you are finished with cutting, make sure to release the blade’s tension to give it room to breathe. Many operators forget this step, causing the blade to stay in that tight and taut state for too long, which will eventually result in cracks. Cracks are not reparable, and if there are too many you will simply have to replace your blade.
